Travel Day

Today, nicknamed “travel day”, was the first day of the program. Personally, I was very nervous for this program because it was my first time in Hawai'i and it would be my first time staying in a college dorm. But that nervousness slowly started to get replaced by excitement the more I started to think about this wonderful opportunity. When I met the staff and fellow peers of this program, I felt reassured that I wasn't going through this alone and meeting like minded people and making friends with them is something I should start to value more. Talking to my fellow peers made me realize how similar most of us are. By that I mean all of us are motivated to be the change and help our environment. Seeing everyone so passionate made me feel very happy and included. When we arrived at the University of Hilo, I was really scared about my who my roommate was and if I would feel comfortable in my dorm, but when I talked to my roommate and looked around the dorm, I knew that living away from my parents for a week would be a lot of fun. After we all freshened up from the very long and tiring flight, we met up at the common area and played some ice breaker games which helped me learn a lot about my fellow peers. My favorite part of this day was definitely getting to know everyone in this program by playing fun icebreakers. This was a very useful tool to get to know each other's interests, hobbies and stories. Overall, I am very excited for what this program holds and I am glad to have met some really amazing people!
